In short
PracticeX listens to your instrument and shows how in tune you played. All of this happens on your phone or tablet. We do not have accounts, we do not collect your recordings, and there are no ads or tracking in the app. The pictures of your music never leave your device unless you choose to send them to us to ask for a checked copy of a piece. To find a checked copy, the app sends the notes it read (numbers for the pitches, nothing else) to our server; you can turn this off (below). The only things we can ever hold about you are what you choose to send us: the feedback form, an e-mail to us (feedback, questions, or a request for a checked copy of a piece). You can ask us to delete them at any time (Delete your data).
The microphone
The app uses the microphone only while you practise (scales, your music, the tuner), and only after you allow it. The sound is analysed on the device and is never uploaded or sent to us or anyone else.
What is kept on your device
- The names you give the players (for example "Player 1"), and the results of their takes.
- The pages of music you add (pictures or PDF pages) and what the app read from them.
- Your settings, such as the instrument and colours.
- How many of the free takes you have used, and whether the Pro subscription is on.
This stays in the app's storage on your device. We cannot see it. Your players, takes, pages of music and settings are deleted when you delete them in the app or remove the app. The count of free takes is the exception: deleting takes or pieces does not give free takes back, and on an iPhone or iPad the count (only a number, nothing about you) is kept in the device's Keychain, so that removing the app does not reset it. It never leaves the device.
What leaves your device
- Looking for a checked copy of a piece: when you add music in "Your music" (and about once a week when you open it again), the app sends the notes it read from it to our server, which runs on Cloudflare: one number for the pitch of each note and the instrument, nothing else (no pictures, no sound, no names, no title). If the notes are a piece we have a checked copy of, the server answers with the notes that were read wrong, and the app puts them right. The server keeps nothing: the notes are compared and forgotten, and they are not logged. Like every website, the server sees your internet address while it answers; it is used only to stop too many requests at once (Cloudflare counts them for a minute) and is not stored by us. When the service is off, the app waits a day before asking at all. You can turn this off under any piece in "Your music" ("Look for a checked copy of this music online"); from then on the app sends nothing.
- Feedback: if you send feedback from the app, the answers and text you enter, with technical details about the app (version, device type, what the app was doing), are sent to us through Formspree, the form service we use. Do not put personal information in the text.
- Sharing and backups: files you share or save (a picture of a result, a backup file, a recording) go only where you send them. A backup file holds the pages of your music: keep it for your own devices.
- A request for a checked copy of a piece: if the notes of a piece are read badly, you can send us its pages, its name, the instrument and what was read wrong, from your own mail app ("Ask for a checked copy"). Only a parent or guardian, or a player of 14 or older, may send it; please cover names and other personal details on the pages first. We use the pages only to make a checked copy of that piece's notes (from a public-domain edition where there is one), we never share or publish them, and we delete the pages and the e-mail's attachments within 30 days. Your e-mail address is used only to tell you when the copy is ready. Ask us at any time to delete your request sooner.
- Purchases: the Pro subscription is bought, renewed, cancelled and refunded through Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play), under their terms and privacy policies. We receive no payment card details, name or e-mail address from the store: the store only tells the app whether a subscription is active. "Restore purchases" in the app asks the store again; it never needs an account with us. To cancel, open your subscriptions in the App Store or Google Play settings.
- RevenueCat: in the iPhone and Android apps, the subscription is checked through RevenueCat, a service that keeps track of subscriptions for apps. The app gives it an anonymous id that it makes up on your device (shown under Settings, PracticeX Pro), never a name or an e-mail address. RevenueCat receives that id, the store's record of a purchase (which subscription, when it started and ends, the country and currency of the price), the app's version and the device's type and system version, and it tells the app whether Pro is on. The app turns off RevenueCat's collection of device identifiers (such as advertising ids). RevenueCat handles this for us under its own privacy policy and does not see your recordings, your music or your takes. The web app does not use it.
Children
Many players are children practising with a parent. The app does not ask for a child's name, e-mail or any other personal information, and it collects no personal information from anyone (the notes sent to look for a checked copy say nothing about who is playing). A parent or teacher decides what is added to the app and whether feedback is sent. PracticeX is made for music students, their parents and teachers. The feedback form is for parents, teachers and players of 14 or older; we do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 14. If you think a child has sent us personal information, tell us and we will delete it (Delete your data).
Delete your data
App: PracticeX (Android and iPhone/iPad). Developer: Taeyong Kim (individual developer), contact practicex.app@gmail.com.
PracticeX has no accounts, so there is no account to delete. The only information about you that we can hold is what you choose to send us, and you can ask us to delete it.
How to ask: write to practicex.app@gmail.com with the subject "Delete my PracticeX data" and, so that we can find it, the name or e-mail address you typed in the feedback form (or the address you e-mailed us from, and the name of the piece if you asked for a checked copy), or the date and time you sent it. We delete it within 30 days and tell you when it is done.
What we delete:
- The name or contact you typed in the feedback form (optional).
- Your comment and your answers in the feedback form.
- The technical details sent with the feedback (app version, device type, what the app was doing), which Formspree, the form service we use, holds for us.
- Feedback or questions you e-mailed us: the e-mail, with its attachments, from our mailbox.
- If you asked for a checked copy of a piece: the pages, the piece's name and the e-mail with its attachments.
What we keep: nothing. When the deletion is done we also delete your request e-mail. Formspree handles the form for us under its own privacy policy: we delete your entry from our Formspree account.
On your own device your players, takes, pages of music and settings are deleted when you delete them in the app or remove the app (the count of free takes on an iPhone or iPad stays in the Keychain, as said above). We cannot see them. Purchase records are held by Apple or Google, not by us: ask them to delete or show them. RevenueCat keeps the record of the purchase under the anonymous id (Settings, PracticeX Pro): send us that id and we ask RevenueCat to delete it.
Your music
Please add only music you own or have the right to use. The app reads it on your device for your own practice. When you send pages to ask for a checked copy, you confirm that you own that copy and allow us to use it for this purpose only.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the new version will be on this page with a new date. Questions, or to have a request deleted: practicex.app@gmail.com, or use Feedback in the app.
